The Pearl of Hope

Despair burrows like a grain of sand embedded in an oyster’s flesh. We cry out to God in an effort to alleviate our despair. Yet the dark chamber, void of vision, clenches its teeth even tighter.

We grope for the light so we can climb out of our darkness and yet fail to see that The Light is with us.

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” –John 1:5

We beseech the heavens for insight so we can see the way, and yet The Way never leaves us. We kick and scream, and He coats our soul with grace. We wrestle, He covers. We squirm, He soothes. Only our surrender will open the jaws of our imprisonment.

This dark chamber of our uncomfortable circumstance prepares us, like the pearl, for entrance into the world. We never know when the plucking will occur. Just when we least expect it, God’s gentle hand removes the pearl and places us with others who illuminate the darkness. We shine as evidence that…

“In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.” – John 1:4

That’s the pearl’s job, nothing more than to be beautiful—to display God’s faithfulness in human form.
